Audi cars will start talking to city traffic systems this fall
The Audis won’t be talking to the traffic lights directly, instead the vehicles will use their built-in LTE connection to get information from a participating city’s central traffic control system. Using that data and GPS, the cars will be able to show on the dashboard when an upcoming signal will turn green. The system does not use the upcoming DSRC V2V (vehicle to vehicle)/ V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure) standard....
Space X delays its Hyperloop competition until next year
Contestants in Space X’s upcoming hyperloop pod competition now have some extra time to prepare their entries. The Elon Musk-owned company announced on Friday that the design contest will be moved back to late January, 2017. This decision comes in response to requests from multiple independent and student-led teams asking for additional time to better refine their submissions. 22 groups in all are competing in this second round,...
Microsoft victory protects overseas data from US warrants
At issue, specifically, were the contents of an email account stored at a datacenter in Dublin, Ireland. Microsoft refused to release the data because the information was stored on servers physically located outside of the country. The New York court then argued that the Stored Communications Act allowed it to issue a warrant for “information that is stored on servers abroad.” The idea is that if Microsoft owns the...
NASA is making a small carbon nanotube telescope for CubeSats
Other telescope mirrors are made of aluminum or glass, but the team’s was created using carbon nanotubes embedded in an epoxy resin. Since carbon nanotubes are exceptionally strong, the team’s mirror is tough and is an efficient conductor of heat. It also doesn’t require polishing, which is a time-consuming process, bringing costs down even further. While NASA’s scientists plan to use off-the-shelf components...
NVIDIA’s GTX 1060 delivers GTX 980 speeds for $249
The GTX 1060 is NVIDIA’s cheapest card built on its 16 nanometer Pascal architecture, and given its performance claims, it seems to show all of the performance benefits of moving to that smaller manufacturing process. It packs in 6GB of GDDR5 RAM and a boost clock speed of 1.7GHz. NVIDIA is mum on the base clock at this point, but given what we’ve seen with the past cards, it’s likely a few hundred megahertz slower....
